13 Brewery Tour Guide & Alexandra

Holtzmann Microbrewery, 40 rue des Vignes, Wingersheim , France 67170

Our Brewery Tour Guide became very animated as he spoke of the German occupation of Alsace. The more lively he got, the less Alexandra translated. I did understand the word "Bosche" which he used a lot. I asked her later if she was sanitizing what he was saying for us and she said for a little of it, yes. Part of what she did translate was that the Germans did not let the French fly the French flag, sing the French National Anthem, or wear the beret. I later asked Alexandra where the word "Bosche" as a term for Germans came from. Alexandra said it was a very bad word, a terrible insult to be used for the Germans, but she did not know the origin. I thought she was just sanitizing the translation again. But later she went online and looked up the origin of the word.

It came from the word for "Head of Cabbage"
