056 WWII German Pillbox

This is an untouched World War II German pillbox along the Marne-Rhine canal just outside of downtown Strasbourg, France. It would have been a machine gun emplacement and would have provided protection for our first canal lock which is shown on the next page. Marco, the first mate on the Madeline, tole me that there once were many German WWII bunkers and pillboxes along the canal. But after the war the farmers demolished them to make more land available for growing their crops.
