The M81E1 could fire either a 152mm cannon round or a wire guided missile. The barrel is rifled to allow the cannon rounds to be spin stabilized. Also at the bottom of the barrel is a keyway running the length of the barrel. When firing wire guided missiles a key at the bottom of the missle engages in the keyway (slot) and prevents the missile from spinning as it transits down the cannon barrel.
