10 Fanfare Acoustic Torpedo Decoy

10 Fanfare Acoustic Torpedo Decoy

This particular device was used to decoy acoustic torpedoes away from the ship. The decoy was towed a few hundred yards astern and made a great deal of noise - much more so than the ship's propellers. It was supposed to lure the acoustic homing torpedoes away from the ship and maybe they did. But the downside was that the ship and convoy could be heard via underwater hydrophones by U-Boats from a much greater distance when it was in operation.
