Japanese Submarines I-14 & I-400

02 I-14 and I-400

The aircraft carrying submarine I-14 alongside the 575ft Submarine Tender Proteus. Notice the round hanger door ahead of the conning tower and the catapult launching ramp running to the forward end of the sub. Look closely at the front of the launching ramp and see the 2 crewmen to get a sense of the size of the sub. The I-14 is 373 feet long and and carried 2 aircraft in its hangar. If you look closely you can see I-400 between I-14 and the Proteus. The I-400 was 400 feet long and carried 3 aircraft in its 115 foot watertight hangar. These were the largest submarines in the world at the time.

This sub was brought to you by the nice folks at Kawasaki.
